Department of Library and Information Science:

The Department of Library and Information Science offers professional degree courses in Library and Information Science (LIS) at graduate, postgraduate and PhD level under the Faculty of Arts. Established in 1956, it is one of the most reputed LIS departments in Western part of India. Academic programmes of the department are designed to train students aspiring to become LIS professionals who can comprehend the ethics and philosophy of librarianship; develop competencies to analyze and solve problems in the LIS domain; and equip with ICT skills and other latest skills to face the emerging challenges witnessed in information world.

This department has been generating LIS professionals, who are in great demand not only in libraries of technical and educational institutions, research institutes, banks, firms, professional associations, religious organisations and museums in the State of Gujarat but also the alumni are holding senior positions in reputed libraries in other parts of the country as well and some are even working abroad.

Employability of the Master’s students has all along been near hundred percent. This was the first Department in Gujarat from where students qualified NET in LIS conducted by the UGC.  This tradition still continues and it is evident from the fact that, on an average three students of the Department qualifies the UGC-NET examination every year.

The Department has a computer laboratory with twenty computers with latest LIS software to impart practical skill to the students. Seminars and workshops are conducted periodically to keep updated with the upcoming academic and research trends in the LIS field.
