About Department

Department of Marathi:

The Department of Marathi was established in 1880 in the erstwhile Baroda College. The subject Marathi is being taught in the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda since its inception i.e. from 1949. Department is actively involved in promoting Marathi Language & Literature by giving emphasis on teaching & research. It is functioning as full fledged department with the facility of study from undergraduate level to post graduate level and Ph.D. Excluding Maharashtra the Department of Marathi is a pioneer institution in entire western part of the country in general and particularly in Gujarat.

Thrust Areas of the Department:

  • To promote Marathi as a vernacular language to counter the onslaught of foreign language like English in this era of Globalisation. It is of utmost importance to promote vernacular languages like Marathi to enable the society preserve its cultural & historical heritage.
  • We would like to develop our department as an important seat for teaching & research in Marathi Language & Literature & also for comparative studies with other languages like Gujarati & Hindi.
  • To unearth the vast treasure of published & unpublished work of 19th century of "Sayaji Period".
