About Department

Department of Philosophy:

Though the teaching of philosophy in this Faculty is as old as that of the Baroda College, the Department of Philosophy was formally instituted in 1948. This is one of the Departments that have contributed to the understanding of the development of Indian Philosophy. The Department proposes to reorient its research degree programmes towards the inter-disciplinary field of related studies. Prof. A.G. Javadekar and Prof. H.M. Joshi are two of the many eminent scholars who were associated with the Department.

The Department has UG and PG courses in Philosophy with M. Phil and Ph.D. programmes as well. It facilitates awareness in Philosophy in context of rich Indian cultural heritage and contemporary trends in west. The major research areas have been with ethical-spiritual tradition of Indian thought, comparative religion and western Philosophy. The Department has recorded an overall increase in the number of students in all its classes. A gold-medal at TYBA is instituted in the name of the late Prof. A. G. Javadekar. Further the department got a number of books from the family of the late Prof. H. M. Joshi.
