Department of Civil Engineering:

The civil engineering is one of the oldest engineering disciplines that deals with the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of the structures and systems including roads, railways, airport, bridges, canals, dams, pipelines, treatment plants, residential/commercial/public buildings and industrial buildings. It comprises many areas covered under different subjects: Surveying, Building Planning and Design, Construction Technology, Fluid Mechanics, Hydrology and water resources, Environmental engineering, Highway and transportation, Structural analysis and design, Concrete technology, Geotechnical engineering.

Career Opportunities
Civil engineering career opportunities are: Site engineers, Project managers, Structural design engineer, Survey and GIS consultant, environment engineer, urban planner, concrete technologist, geotechnical engineer, hydrologist and water resources experts etc. Civil engineering field provides you an opportunity to work in government, public and private sector organizations. After few years of experience, a civil engineer can become entrepreneur with own establishment.

The Department
The department of civil engineering is a legacy department conducting B.E. (Civil) programme since 1949. Our mission is to provide centre of excellence in civil engineering education and research. At present, the department is having 110 (+25% EWS) seats in B.E. (Civil) programme and 45 seats in part time degree programme. Department started P.G. programme first in the western region in 1956. At present we are conducting M.E. (Civil) programme in Highway and transportation engineering, Environmental engineering, and Hydraulic structures, each having intake of 18 (+ 25% EWS) seats. ME (Civil) programme in Structural engineering, Geotechnical engineering and Fracture mechanics are conducted by the department of Applied Mechanics.

Teaching-Learning Process
Our students learn the fundamentals of engineering by performing experiments in our well-equipped laboratories such as surveying, fluid mechanics, environmental engineering and highway engineering. The core competency is developed by our well designed tutorials and assignments. The department is having well equipped computer labs with internet connectivity. Our classrooms are equipped with projection facilities. Our whole faculty campus has wifi connectivity.

Major Laboratories and Equipment
Department has full-fledged laboratories like Surveying, Environmental Engineering, Hydraulic Structure, and Highway and Transportation Engineering labs which caters to Topographic survey, Water and Wastewater Analysis, Solid Waste Analysis, Air Pollution Monitoring, Microbial analysis, Fluid mechanics, Aggregate testing, Bitumen testing, Bitumen mix design,  Pavement performance & Evaluation analysis.
These laboratories are equipped with many advanced and sophisticated instruments like Gas chromatograph, Atomic Absorption spectrophotometer, UV-Vis spectrophotometers, High performance Liquid Chromatograph, TOC analyser, Stack monitoring kit, PM 2.5 sampler, microbalance, sand tank model, tilting flume and flow measuring devices, Marshall testing equipment,  Automatic vehicle counter and classifier, Doppler Radar Speedometer, etc.

Research and Sponsored projects
The department has received a grant of Rs. 1.09 Cr from DST-FIST for the development of Environmental Engineering Lab. The department has obtained Research Projects from important institutes such as SAC-ISRO, Climate Change Department-GoG, etc. Several industrial consultancy projects from various organizations like ONGC, Gujarat Rural Electrification Corporation Ltd., GE (Alstom), Central Road Research Institute, etc. The faculty members of Environmental Engg section have successfully completed a variety of tasks assigned by Hon’ble National Green Tribunal.
The department offers value added consultancy services in areas like Design & Planning of Water Supply System and Calibration of Flow Measurement Devices, Treatability Studies for   Municipal and Industrial Wastewater, Hazardous Waste, Municipal Solid Waste, Air pollution control devices, Surface Water & Ground Water Modeling, Traffic behavior study, Rigid Pavement Design, and Quality Control Work of roads, etc.

Strength
In civil engineering department, we have highly qualified 19 permanent faculty members. We provide environment for active learning. We have strong linkages with industries for testing, research and providing consulting and environmental audit. The P.G. dissertations are carried out to solve field problems. Field experts are invited for evaluation of students’ work. These interaction activities help us understanding need of the society. Accordingly, we continuously update our curricula. Our civil engineering alumni association is very active has become a partner to our development.

Value Addition
Our students acquire knowledge and skills with excitement. They are sensitized toward society by the programmes like Prerna. They develop technical and soft skills by the events like Paramarsh and Footprint at FTE and other major events held in other institutions. Finally they build the capability here to perform a productive role in the society.

Performance Indicators
The performance indicators of quality education at UG level in our department are GATE result and campus placement. Every year many of our students clear the GATE exam conducted by IIT for PG study and placement in State owned PSUs. Students also clear GPSC exams and many have been posted in various Government departments such as R&B, Irrigation, GWSSB, etc. In addition, L&T ECC, L&T Power, Alstom, Reliance, Tata Chemicals, Torrent Power, Jain Irrigation, Shapoorji Pallonji are few major recruiters.
