About Department

Department of Textile Chemistry:

The Textile Chemistry Department is the oldest department of The “Kalabhavan” Technical institute which was started in the year 1890, by his Highness Late Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III of Baroda, in the Faculty of Tech. & Engg. That time Textile Chemistry was popularly known as ‘Rangshala’, where artisan courses were conducted in Bleaching, Dyeing, Printing, Sizing etc. The first Head of the department was Prof. T. K. Gajjar when Kalabhavan was established in 1890.
In the late Nineteenth Century, Diploma in Textile Chemistry (Three years) Course was started; about hundred students were admitted and passed out from the department.
After independence, the year 1949, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda was established and Department of Textile Chemistry was also commenced with the establishment of Faculty of Technology & Engineering. Since then, the department has kept moving from diploma courses to Ph.D. courses. The department presently offers following courses. The thrust areas of the Department are Eco-friendly textile wet processing, Nano-Technology in textile processing, Natural dye applications, Chemical modification of textile fibres for improved performance etc.
