Department of Linguistics:

The Department of Linguistics at The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda was established in 1964. It is one of the important centres for studying language science in India and it provides students with a strong academic foundation to understand how human language works and how it shapes communication and society. The department offers both UG and PG Programmes. At the undergraduate level the department offers Majors, Minors, Skill Enhancement Courses, and Internship (for third year Major students). It offers various application-based and advanced courses at the Postgraduate level.

COURSES OFFERED:

The curriculum is designed to equip students with both theoretical insight and practical skills, preparing them for academic research and diverse professional pathways. It provides a comprehensive exploration of language through both foundational and advanced courses in core, inter-disciplinary, and career-oriented areas of language study aligned with the specialization of the faculty members:

Core courses: Build a strong theoretical foundation with courses in Phonetics, Phonology, Morphology, Syntax, and Semantics.

Inter-disciplinary courses: Expand understanding in specialized fields such as Pragmatics, Semiotics, Sociolinguistics, Applied Linguistics, and Historical Linguistics, among others.

  • Corpus Linguistics examines language through large digital corpora, including speech data, and supports AI by providing linguistic datasets for training and improving language models and speech-based systems.
  • Ecolinguistics is a contemporary and emerging discipline offered at select universities in India and around the world, that examines the dynamic relationship between language, ecology, and environmental discourse, focusing on how language shapes and reflects human interactions with the natural world.
  • Cognitive Linguistics studies the interplay between language, cognition, and human thought, focusing on how language reflects and shapes conceptualization, perception, and understanding of the world.
  • Computational Linguistics focuses on how computational techniques can be applied to understand and process human language, especially in speech recognition, synthesis, and intelligent communication systems. It aligns with the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
  • Film Studies, Narratology, and Semiotics involve the study of narrative structure, visual language, and meaning making, using signs and symbols.
  • Language Documentation & Field Methods provide training to students to document languages, create language resources, and conduct ethnographic research, particularly in understudied and endangered language communities, with a focus on fieldwork practices and community engagement.

  • Students’ Film Club: The department has a Linguistics Students’ Film Forum which provides a space for screening films on language and culture, followed by interactive discussions.
  • Departmental Newzine: The department brings out an annual newzine “Babel,” developed through a collaborative effort between faculty and students; it features articles, poems, photographs, artworks, puzzles, interviews with linguists, and career guidance.
  • Linguistic and Cultural Observances: Important events such as International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, Bharatiya Bhasha Diwas, and International Mother Language Day are celebrated with talks, film screenings, and outreach programs highlighting India’s linguistic diversity.
  • Environmental Awareness Activities: The department also celebrates International Mother Earth Day with activities such as tree planting and cleanliness drives, promoting environmental awareness.
