About Department

Department of Geography:

The Department of Geography was established in the year 1952 in Faculty of Science under the leadership of Prof. V.A.Janaki, the founder head right from inception to 1978. Department runs full-fledged undergraduate in Science [B.Sc. (Honors)] and Arts [B.A. (Honors)], Postgraduate courses in Science (M.Sc.) and Research Programmes in various disciplines of Geography. Currently there are 12 faculty members, 2 Professors, 1 Associate Professor, 1 Assistant Professor and 8 temporary faculty members.
TEACHING
For students selecting Geography gets the modern techniques and opportunities for active participation. Honest efforts are made for creating good infrastructure to enhance quality of the present facilities to improve teaching. Department has been organizing national/ international level conferences, seminars, workshops and training programs, popular lectures for benefit of students. The syllabi of the various courses are upgraded in line with presentday requirements. This is understood as the number of students qualifying in UGC NET, CSIR, GSLET and other competitive examinations.

INFRASTRUCTURE
The department have facilities to work on instruments like digital theodolite, digital planimeter, GPS, RS and GIS laboratory with Image Processing and GIS software, apart from conventional instruments.

RESEARCH
eachers are involved in research projects funded by Department of Science and Technology (DST), Ministry of Earth Science, ICMR, NRDMS, UGC and others. MISSION To offer an surroundings in which faculty, staff and students can cultivate the knowledge, wisdom and values that will help ensure the endurance of present and future generations and improve the quality of life for all. To help students to develop an understanding and appreciation for the complex cultural and physical worlds in which they live and to contribute to society, recognise their rational in physical and human development.

That research, teaching, and learning together can create a positive culture of higher education and healthier societies.

FUTURE PLANS
Introduce and upgrade courses to generate employment opportunities for students. Conducting Short Term Training Programmes with special emphasis on RS and GIS, Climate Change and other relevant areas for Professionals & Academicians Conducting certificate courses for specialized technologies. Organizing Conferences on contemporary areas in collaboration with industries and professional bodies and Expert Lectures for students from eminent personalities to popularize subject.
