Dear Faculty Members, Students, and Stakeholders, It is an honour to address you all as the Dean of the Faculty of Performing Arts (FPA) at The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. Our institution has a rich history, beginning in February 1886 as 'Chhokarao Ni Gayan Shala', established under the guidance of Prof. Mawla Bux and the patronage of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III. This marked a significant step in formal music education in India. In 1936, it became ‘Music College’; in 1949, ‘Bharatiya Sangeet Vidyalaya’; and in 1953, ‘The College of Indian Classical Music, Dance and Dramatics’. It was granted faculty status on March 26, 1984, as the ‘Faculty of Performing Arts’. |
Though we follow an academic structure, our pedagogy embraces the traditional 'Guru Shishya Parampara', combining it with university, UGC, and state regulations. Our teaching is also rooted in the ‘Gharana Parampara’ and the Indian Knowledge System.
Our faculty includes educators from traditional guru lineages and contemporary backgrounds. We invite eminent artists and scholars for concerts, workshops, lectures, demonstrations, and interactive sessions. Our alumni also contribute to these enriching programs.
Performance is central to our curriculum. Events like 'Sabha Gayan', 'Sabha Vadan', 'Sabha Nritya', 'Manch Parva', and 'Satur Theatre' provide students with hands-on stage experience, essential for their artistic development.
Firmly rooted in Indian tradition, our institution remains committed to the vision of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III. We strive to nurture young talent and preserve the legacy of Indian performing arts.
I extend my best wishes to all students, faculty members and all those who are associated with this prestigious institute.
Prof. (Dr.) Gaurang Bhavsar
