From Dean's Desk:
Dean’s Message
It is a matter of immense privilege and pride for me to lead the Faculty of Education and Psychology, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda—a faculty distinguished by its rich legacy, professional commitment, academic excellence, and enduring contribution to education, psychology, and human development.
The roots of the faculty can be traced to the Secondary Teachers’ Training College of the erstwhile Baroda State, established in 1935, which was affiliated with the University of Bombay in 1938. With the establishment of The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in 1949, the institution evolved into the Faculty of Education and Psychology, initially comprising the Department of Education and the Department of Psychology. The Department of Educational Administration was subsequently established in 1951, further strengthening the faculty’s contribution to educational planning, management, leadership, and administration. The Department of Physical Education later became an integral part of the faculty, broadening its academic and professional engagement with physical education, sports, health, fitness, and holistic development.
Another significant milestone in the faculty’s academic journey was achieved in 1965, when the Department of Education was accorded the status of Centre of Advanced Study in Education (CASE). The Department continued with this distinction until 2018, when the UGC discontinued its SAP programmes. More recently, in 2023, the establishment of the UGC–Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centre (MMTTC) at the faculty added a new dimension to its academic contribution by strengthening professional development and capacity building among teachers in higher education.
Today, the Faculty represents a vibrant and multidisciplinary academic community comprising four Departments—the Department of Education, Department of Educational Administration, Department of Psychology, and Department of Physical Education—along with two University Experimental Schools: the University Experimental School–Gujarati Medium (Grant-in-Aid) and the University Experimental School–English Medium both offering education from Classes I to XII. Together, these academic units create a distinctive and integrated ecosystem connecting school education, teacher education, psychology, educational leadership and administration, physical education and sports, research, professional development, and community engagement.
Grounded in the philosophy of promoting individual, social, and national well-being, the Faculty offers a diverse range of undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, professional, and doctoral programmes designed to prepare competent professionals, reflective practitioners, researchers, and academic leaders.
The Department of Education offers the two-years Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.), two-year Master of Education (M.Ed.), four-years B.A.B.Ed. Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) and Post Graduate Diploma in Guidance and Counselling (PGDGC).
The Department of Educational Administration offers the one-year Post Graduate Diploma in Educational Management (PGDEM) and the two-years Master of Management Studies in Education (MMS–Education).
The Department of Psychology offers the four-years Bachelor in Psychology (B.Psy–Grant-in-Aid), four-year Bachelor of Arts in Psychology [B.A. (Hons.)–Higher Payment Programme], two-year Master of Arts in Psychology under both Grant-in-Aid and Higher Payment categories, Post Graduate Diploma in Clinical and Applied Hypnosis, and Post Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Development.
The Department of Physical Education offers four-years Bachelor of Physical Education and Sports (BPES) and Post Graduate Diploma in Health and Fitness (PGDHF).
The faculty also provides opportunities for advanced research leading to Ph.D. degrees in Education and Psychology, thereby contributing to the development of researchers and scholars capable of addressing emerging educational, psychological, and societal challenges.
Research, Innovation and Social Commitment
Teaching at the Faculty is deeply integrated with research, innovation, field engagement, and extension. We continuously revisit our curricula, research priorities, pedagogical practices, and professional programmes in response to emerging societal needs and the evolving directions of state and national education policies.
Our research addresses areas of contemporary relevance and social significance. In Education, major thrust areas of research include Educational Technology, Educational Administration, Women’s Education, and Inclusive Education. In Psychology, research engagement extends across Clinical Psychology, Counselling Psychology, Industrial Psychology, and Sports Psychology. Through research, training, extension, and academic dialogue, the faculty has contributed to educational development, professional practice, and policy discourse, particularly in the areas of school education, teacher preparation, educational administration, and human development.
The Tuesday Seminar: A Tradition of Scholarly Dialogue
The faculty members of Department of Education (CASE) Initiated in 1979 to introduce greater academic openness and refine the preparation of scholars within the doctoral programme, the weekly seminar has become a hallmark academic tradition at the department. Originally conceived as an open forum rather than an evaluative gatekeeping measure, the seminar requires every doctoral candidate to present a detailed research proposal prior to formal registration, allowing them to strengthen their work through constructive suggestions and observations from fellow peers and faculty. Beyond proposal defences, it serves as a dual-purpose platform for faculty development, collaborative discussions on external funding proposals, and progress updates on ongoing or completed projects. Today, this longstanding tradition is regularly scheduled every Tuesday and is widely recognized and attended across the campus as the Tuesday Seminar, sustaining a rich culture of shared inquiry, peer review, and interactive research.
Strengthening National Academic Collaborations
The faculty is equally committed to extending its academic engagement beyond institutional boundaries through meaningful partnerships and collaborations.
A significant step in this direction was taken on 11 May 2026, when the UGC–Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centre (MMTTC), The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, entered into Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with nine educational institutions across India: Hansraj Jivandas College of Education, Mumbai; Sheth MNC College of Education, Dabhoi, Vadodara District; Mittal Institute of Education, Bhopal; Banasthali Vidyapith, Rajasthan; Vijayashree Educational Institute, Madhya Pradesh; Raja Balwant Singh College, Agra; Shri Murli Manohar Town Post-Graduate College, Ballia; Guru Kashi University, Talwandi Sabo, Bathinda; and Ravenshaw University, Cuttack. These national-level collaborations are oriented towards multidisciplinary academic engagement, research collaboration, faculty development, knowledge exchange, capacity building, and emerging technologies. Collectively benefiting 1,095 faculty members, these partnerships represent an important step towards building wider academic networks and creating opportunities for collaborative learning, innovation, research, and professional growth.
A Legacy of School Education
The University Experimental Schools constitute another important dimension of the Faculty’s academic heritage. Through the University Experimental School–Gujarati Medium (Grant-in-Aid) and the University Experimental School–English Medium, the Faculty has maintained a meaningful connection between school education, teacher preparation, educational experimentation, and professional practice.
Particularly during the 1970s through the 1990s, the Experimental Schools nurtured generations of learners, many of whom went on to establish distinguished careers, including in medicine, engineering, and other professions at national and international levels.
This legacy continues to remind us that education is not merely about academic achievement; it is about recognising potential, creating opportunities, nurturing values, and enabling individuals to contribute meaningfully to society and the nation.
Our Educational Vision
At the faculty, we believe that education must extend beyond classrooms, textbooks, and examinations. Our endeavour is to prepare learners who possess professional competence while being socially responsible, ethically grounded, reflective, resilient, and responsive to the needs of a changing world.
Our dedicated faculty members strive to provide an interdisciplinary and holistic educational experience through curricular, co-curricular, extracurricular, field-based, and community-oriented learning opportunities. Internships, field placements, continuous assessment, experiential learning, and professional engagement form integral components of our academic programmes, enabling students to connect theoretical knowledge with real-life situations and professional practices.
Among the distinctive strengths of the faculty are its professional academic culture, vibrant teaching-learning environment, socially relevant research, interdisciplinary engagement, community outreach, teamwork, and commitment to innovation. Our academic engagements at national and international levels further enrich the learning environment and enable our students, teachers, researchers, and professionals to participate meaningfully in a wider academic community.
As we move forward, our commitment is not merely to preserve the distinguished legacy of the faculty, but to build upon it with innovation, inclusion, excellence, and responsibility. While remaining firmly rooted in our rich academic traditions, we continue to respond to emerging developments in education, psychology, technology, research, and professional practice.
We aspire to remain an academic space where knowledge is created and shared, learners are inspired, professionals are prepared, teachers and leaders are empowered, research responds to societal needs, collaborations transcend institutional boundaries, and education becomes a powerful instrument for individual, social, and national development.
I warmly welcome our students, scholars, teachers, alumni, collaborators, and visitors to the Faculty of Education and Psychology. I wish our students an enriching and transformative academic journey with us and our alumni continued success in their professional and personal endeavours.
