About Faculty

Faculty of Social Work, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda was founded in the post-Independence era on 15th March 1950. The foundation stone of the faculty was laid by the First Vice Chancellor of The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Dr. (Smt.) Hansa Mehta. The faculty is one of the pioneering social work institutes, third in the chronological order of establishment in India. Since its inception the faculty has followed a generic approach to Social Work Education offering Master of Social Work as its flagship program.  In the Golden Jubilee year of the faculty during 1999, a full- fledged two year Master of Human Resource Management program was introduced to respond to the growing needs of the business and social sector in managing its Human Resources. This was a major landmark in the history of the faculty and an important milestone for its growth in the professional management education. The Faculty also started Bachelor of Social Work Program (B.S.W.) in the year 2013, converted now into a Five year Integrated Program (Dual Degree) in Social Work(BMSW)  from 2021. Apart from these, Faculty of Social Work also offers  Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Relations & Personnel Management  (IRPM) and a Post Graduate Diploma in Human Resource  Management (DHRM ) for working professionals  &  aspiring Human Resource Professionals respectively.

The faculty  is recognized for its work by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi, and was awarded with ASHISH grant, the DRS and DSA programme till  Phase –III on the  thrust  areas of Poverty Alleviation and Social Development with special focus  on Children, Women, Elderly, and Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe in  Phase- I, Industry and Society, Family and Gender Studies  &  Community Development in the Phase –II, Community and Public Health, Gender Equity  & Empowerment of Women and Corporate Social  Responsibility in  Phase-III.

The faculty is actively engaged in academic, research and extension work for which it collaborates closely with the Government, Corporate and Voluntary Sector through various ways like training personnel to enhance service delivery through technical assistance, helping in policy/program formulation, undertaking need assessment, impact evaluation studies, programme implementation and outreach services in the area of IR, HR, CSR and agenda related to Sustainable development goals.

The faculty is consistently ranked among Top Five social work colleges of the country by The Outlook Magazine- 2017, 2018, 2019 and was ranked 2nd in the category of the Best Value for Money Program among all social work colleges of India in the survey conducted by India Today – MDRA during the year 2021. Recently the Faculty received a Global Excellence Award for Academics and Social Innovation for the efforts during COVID Pandemic - 2021 by Vasundhara Blessing Foundation under Niti Aayog. The Faculty is also recognised and awarded with Innovative Response to Covid-19 affected People by NAPSWI (National Association of Professional Social Workers in India) for the year 2021.
