Dr. Jyotindra M Mehta did graduation from Elphinston College, Bombay University and went to do his master’s in history and Economics from the Oxford University. Upon his return, he joined the Elphinston College as a Fellow. Maharaja Sayajirao brought him to Baroda to teach in the Baroda College in 1922 where he rose to the post of Professor and later served as its Principal till 1944. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Agroeconomics from the London School of Economics on a scholarship by Maharaja Sayajirao. He was a very distinguished administrator in the Gaekwad administration and was also appointed as the tutor for Prince Patapsinh Rao Gaekwad. He worked for many years as Commissioner of Higher Education in the erstwhile Baroda State and later as additional Commissioner of Education in Pune. He was appointed as the First Chairman of the Public Service Commission of Saurashtra. He was also appointed as an expert in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for conducting the written examination. He was also a member in the panel for conducting interviews for selection of candidates for IAS. He was a Member of the committee that prepared the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda Act, 1949 and was thus intimately associated with the university in its formative years. He was a member of the Senate and the Syndicate of Bombay University and later Maharaja Sayajirao University. He became the 2nd Vice Chancellor of the M S University of Baroda for two successive terms - 1958 to 1961 and 1961 to 1964. It was during his tenure that Faculty of Law was established (1961) in the M S University of Baroda. Prof. Mehta was instrumental in getting a substantial grant from the Ford Foundation, USA for establishing the General Education Building. After his retirement, he was invited by the Department of Economics, Faculty of Arts to deliver the prestigious Sir Sayajirao Gaekwad Memorial Lecture.
