Lord Bhikhu Parikh Vice Chancellor of the Maharaja Sayajirao University, 1981to1984, belongs to a rare order of distinguished Indians who have earned significant regard in the western world and brought honour to both their nation and humanity at large. From humble beginnings in a village in Gujarat, India, Lord Bhiku Parikh's has been a career of amazing achievements and brilliant thought. He has had a sterling career speckled with consistent and significant contributions to world knowledge as an academic, a social scientist, political economist, and philosopher. Much lauded for his fine mind and keen intellect, Lord Bhiku Parikh taught at several universities in the west, won numerous awards and honors, and was graced with several honorary doctorate degrees. In the year 2007 the government of India conferred upon him the title of Padma Bhushan. Palgrave Macmillan. 2008. At the age of 15 Lord Bhiku Parikh took admission in the graduate programme of the University of Bombay. After completing his master’s from the same he joined the graduate program at the London School of Economics from where he also received his Ph D. Later he taught at the London School of Economics and at the University of Glasgow before finding a long-term position at the University of Hull. In between, between 1981 to 1984 he was Vice-Chancellor at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in India. He was also the holder of a Centennial Professorship in the Centre for the Study of Global Governance at the London School of Economics and a professorship of political philosophy at the University of Westminster. In 2002, he served as president of the Academy of Learned Societies in the Social Sciences. Lord Bhiku Parekh has also served on the Commission for Racial Equality - including a spell as Vice-Chairman. He has held membership of several bodies concerned with issues of racial equality and multiculturalism - most notably as Chairman of the Commission on the Future of Multi-Ethnic Britain from 1998 to 2000. The report of this body (often referred to as the "Parekh Report") has been the basis for much of the debate on multiculturalism in the UK in the early 21st century. Professor Parekh became a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 1988, and of the Academy of Learned Societies in the Social Sciences in 1999. In 2000 he was appointed a life peer as Baron Parekh of Kingston upon Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire. In the year 2003 he became a fellow of the British Academy and in the same year he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Essex. The Nottingham Trent University and the Edge Hill University are among the universities that awarded him with honorary doctorate degrees.Lord Bhiku Parekh met his wife Pramila (Dalal) during his student days in Bombay. They have three sons, Raj, Nitin, Anant.
