DR. SURESH PARSHOTTAMDAS DALAL, born on October 11, 1932, in Mumbai was one of the modern Gujarati's poet, essayist, litterateur and editor. He did his B.A. in Gujarati in 1953, M.A. in 1955 and Ph.D. in 1969. He had an extended career in academia serving as the Head of Gujarati Department at S.N.D.T. University; the Vice-chancellor at The M.S. University of Baroda; and a "National Lecturer" for the University Grants Commission. In addition, he had served as Member, Advisory Board of Gujarati Sahitya Academy (1983-1987). He left the academic life to establish Image Publications and Writings as with a view to promote Gujarati literary and cultural life. In addition to his publishing firm, he was the editor of the Gujarati poetry journal Kavita and the literary quarterly Vivecana. He won the 2005 Sahitya Academy Award for Gujarati language for his poem Akhand Zalar Vage. He was awarded with several other awards including the Gujarat Government Award 5 times, for his contribution to Gujarati literature. He also received an award for his contribution as a best teacher from Government of Maharashtra in 1980-81 and the Ranjitram Gold Medal for Creative Writing in 1983.nnWidely travelled he visited the USA in 1978 1981 1983 and U.K. in 1981 and 1988 to interview American and British poets. The Library of Congress has more than one hundred and ten titles by and on him including Hastakshara, Kavitano ananda and Samvadaas audio recordings. He died on August 10, 2012, in Mumbai, of a heart attack, aged 79.
